Date movie is an attempt to
send up the recent spate of relationship comedies which are
outrageous/gross out. There in lies my first problem. How can you send
these films up, and why would you try? American Pie, Meet The Parents et
al are send ups themselves of the gentler (i.e. girl orientated)
relationship comedies. To me it's about as necessary as a send up of
Airplane. It just doesn't work.
As a film, this is, at best,
directionless drivel. Random gags are inserted, poorly executed and
forgotten as quickly as a Colin Farrell relationship. In fact almost
everything about this film screams crap. I say almost because the one
decent area of this film is, surprisingly, the acting. Of course decent
is relative, it certainly wouldn't be a highlight in a film such as Man
On Fire, but compared to the material the cast work hard. Alyson
Hannigan is, well, cute and bubbly. She bounces around the screen with
enthusiasm, when in reality she should have been hanging her head low
for being involved in such dog drool. Even the Hugh Grant, foppish
Englishman wannabe is fairly entertaining. Highlight of course is Eddie
Griffin, who can take any material and make it, well, better than it has
a right to be.
Overall this is a film to
seriously avoid, I laughed out loud a few times, but it wasn't enough to
save a poor, poor movie. Disappointing, roll on Scary Movie 4! |
