Rob Zombies follow up to 2003's "House Of A
1000 Corpses" lacks the originals depravity and downright horror, yet
shows maturity and progression for Zombie as a filmmaker. Although still
stylised in the same vein as a rock music video, Zombie has learned a
few new tricks and reduced some of the manic camera movements that
plagued the first film. Regardless of the excessive and sometimes
throwaway use of slo-mo (surely adding ten minutes to the running time)
this is a well constructed, well paced and visually imaginative film.
Using slightly sun scorched colours, most of Devil's Rejects action
occurs during the daytime, allowing a brighter crimson smattering.
The cast is uniformly impressive, from
the ever brilliant William Forsythe, via the maniacal Sid Haig and
Leslie Easterbrook, to the sociopathic (yet strangely Cute) Sherri Moon.
All characters are well portrayed, and even the slightly stuttering
script doesn't quell the casts enthusiasm. What is thrilling about this
film is the character development, in the end you are being tricked into
sympathising with the serial killing, serial raping Firefly family.
Not as Brutal as "House of 1000 Corpses",
although certainly not a family film, Devils Rejects proves to be an
improvement both in terms of director ability and entertainment.
However, this is still a brutally violent film, and not for everyone. |
