Let me just get this out the way, I loved the first Pirates Of The Carribean film. I thought it was a hilarious, well structured and unique piece of film making. Just what we needed as we got jaded with the mindless, soulless blockbusters we were becoming used to. Johnny Depp's new character in Jack Sparrow, sorry, Captain Jack Sparrow, was a revelation. Played between the perfect pitch of comedy and, erm, comedy, he was fresh and exciting. Indeed that character was what brought the film up from good to excellent. The unfortunate things is, because the character is no longer new, it hasn't done the same for the sequel. Don't get me wrong here, this is a good enjoyable film. It's fairly well written, well performed and some of the set pieces are spectacular. It just lacks the fresh and funny appeal the first movie had. It doesn't have that something special to lift it...until the end. For a film that only registers as "good", you are competely hooked for the 3rd film due to the ending. I will say no more. Johnny Depp is again wonderful in his role, although it is Bloom who impreses more this time. He isn't given the same dedicated screen time as Depp, but he is given more depth, more scope than before. Could the 3rd film be his coming of age? There is potential. Knightley wasn't featured much this time (comparitively), however she handled herself well. Her character, Elizabeth, grew the most in the movie, and there are some interesting areas to be explored for her in the next film. I just hope she has a few meals before then. I enjoyed Dead Man's Chest, even if it wasn't as truly spectacular as the first. My advice is drop the expectations and just go in for a coupe of giggles and some popcorn.
