Scary Movie 4 has a
reputation to live upto. It needs to be exceptionally silly, and the
shots it takes at blockbusters have to hit the target dead centre. It
doesn't live upto this. From the start, with the Saw parody, Scary movie
spreads it's net and mostly misses. Part of the problem is it takes aim
at films people don't really care about. Saw was interesting, War Of The
Worlds a blockbuster and the Village was, well, predictable.
Unlike targeting genre
defining films (Scary Movie vs Scream), horror classics (Scary movie 2
opening vs The Exorcist) or interesting debuts (Scary Movie 3 Vs Ring/8
Mile), Scary Movie 4 targets films that, while they may have done OK at
the box office, not a lot of people are interested in. Not to say those
films are good or bad, they're just not interesting enough to draw the
laughs. In fact, the only real laughs I found in this film were the
Brokeback Mountain parody (Mostly because of Anthony Anderson) and the
suicide bomber joke (and that only really drew a laugh because it was so
un-expected and so un-pc).
Cast wise it's the usual
suspects. Charlie Sheen turns up for a brief cameo, taking the pastiche
out of his bad boy, sex maniac persona, and there's an interesting turn
by Bill Pullman, who is always better in a gentler comedy role (see
Casper). Anna Faris pops up again as Cindy, and although she plays the
character well, the character herself is becoming increasingly
irritating and generally dislikeable.
If these movies are to
continue (and why shouldn't they, after all they make a mint at the box
office), then they need to rethink the scripts and find a new lead
character. Mind you, I suppose it's still better than the romantic
comedies being released!! |
