Sky High is Disney's attempt
to slice into the world of superhero's with their own brand of humour
and vision. Surprisingly, unlike a lot of Disney live action output,
this film is rather good. Set around the premise of a school for
superhero's "in the making", the story centres around Will Stronghold,
and his struggles to fit in with the crowd. What sets Will out from the
rest of the school population are his parents, who are the two most
famous, most celebrated superheroes of all time.
Cleverly Disney has taken
the basic teen school movie and injected flying, freezing and melting
into the mix. The school is cleverly divided into two factions, the
hero's and the sidekicks, much like the geeks and the jocks. What we get
is the usual Disney moral codes of equality and inner strength, however
with it's collection of unique characters and original hero's/sidekicks
we get a nice touch of "out of the ordinary".
The cast is uniformly
good, with Kurt Russell chiselling his jaw and puffing his chest as
superdaddy. However the real standouts are the kids playing the
sidekicks, each of whom seem to have realised what their role in the
movie is. They are always there, and you rarely see any posturing from
them, however as per normal the ones ignored by the popular kids are the
ones who are required to save the day. A hero is only as good as their
sidekick.
Disney have again
surprised people with this movie, proving that they can provide decent
output. The challenge will be for them to keep it up. |
